Wouldn’t you love to be able to celebrate independence from your kitchen with a 4-in-1 smoker grill? When it comes to summer food preparation and cooking, no one likes being cooped up inside, especially when entertaining. You can bake, roast, smoke, and grill to your heart’s content without having to heat up your house or yourself on a summer day. “How? Get me out of the kitchen! Sign me up!” is what most folks would say to that proposition. The secret is the Big Green Egg ceramic kamado-style outdoor cooker. Aqua Pools is a huge fan of the Big Green Egg, and we’d like to share some ideas on how a BGE, plus one essential “Eggcessory,” can transform your cooking style.
It is pretty much undisputed that for people who take their barbecue seriously, there is no grill better than the Big Green Egg. It is ideal for grilling steaks, hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggies. However, if you want to take your grilling game to the next level and master other cooking techniques, you need one simple “Eggcessory” for your Big Green Egg. With the “ConvEGGtor”, you can transform your grill into a unit that can also bake, roast, and smoke. This multipurpose tool is a ceramic plate with three legs that you insert into the BGE in order to experience these other cooking techniques.
Bake in Your Big Green Egg
When you place the ConvEGGtor feet down into the Big Green Egg, it is raised up from the heat source. This allows for indirect cooking, such as baking a pizza. You can also bake bread, cookies, and cakes in the Big Green Egg! The ceramic plate blocks the direct heat from the fire and allows the hot air to circulate inside the unit like a convection oven.
Use Your BGE to Roast
You can set up your Big Green Egg to roast meats by placing the ConvEGGtor over the fire with the feet up. Place your wire grid on top of the feet. When smoking or roasting it is a good idea to put a drip pan under the grid (on top of the ceramic plate) to catch any drips. This is another example of cooking with indirect heat — producing the juiciest and most tender roasts ever.
Turing the Big Green Egg into a Smoker
Using aromatic wood smoking chips in your Big Green Egg will produce delectably flavored meats. Some varieties BGE offers are cherry, hickory, pecan and apple. Smoking requires low and slow cooking, usually at a temperature between 225-300°. The air regulators on the top and bottom of the unit can be adjusted so you maintain your desired temperature for 16-18 hours or more. Place the ConvEGGtor in the Big Green Egg with the feet in the up position. Place a drip pan on top and cover with the grill like you would for roasting.
Direct Grilling on the BGE: Celebrate Independence from Your Kitchen with a 4-in-1 Smoker Grill
When you grill on your Big Green Egg, you are placing the food over direct heat. Foods such as burgers, steaks, chicken, kebabs, and sausages are perfect for cooking this way. These types of meats are best cooked fast and at a high temperature. The outside is seared, and the juices become locked inside. With the Big Green Egg, you grill with the lid closed, which minimizes flare ups.
