Pools used to be a one shape fits all situation. You could have a big rectangle or a small rectangle, but either way you were going to have a rectangle. Thankful those days are no more. Now, you can get a swimming pool in any shape that you want. From Elvis’s heart shaped pool to the buffalo shaped pool in Primm Valley, people want a pool that reflects their unique style. You probably aren’t looking for a buffalo shaped pool, but like many pool buyers you would like to at least know what your options are before you decide on a shape. So let’s look at some of your options and how you can decide which swimming pool shape is right for you.
Rectangular
Obviously rectangular pools are still an option and a good one at that. Rectangular pools provide clean, sleek lines. They give a modern flair and with the right design features there is absolutely no lack of style and character. Rectangular pools are also preferred if you plan to exercise in your swimming pool.
Rounded Corners
Rounded corners give you the symmetry and order that comes with a rectangular pool, but all of the edges are rounded off. You can round them however you would like, leaving your pool very rectangular or giving it more of an oval shape. Rounded corner pools bring a little bit of softness to the classic rectangle.
Freeform
Freeform pools have been gaining in popularity because the shape is totally up to you and your builder. Most often people go with a fluid non-uniform design that goes with other features that are already in the backyard. Freeform pools complement natural landscaping. They also look fantastic with unique water features. Freeform pools definitely give you a one of a kind pool.
Now that you know the options how do you decide which is right for you?
What type of pool are you installing?
The shape of your swimming pool may be limited by what type of pool you are installing. A fiberglass pool for example comes from a pre-formed mold so you will be limited to the available shapes. A gunite pool on the other hand is highly customizable. The shape of a gunite pool is only limited by your imagination and the skill level of your pool builder. Vinyl liner pools fall somewhere in between. They can be customized, but not nearly to the extent of a gunite pool.
How will you use it?
You should also consider how you will use your swimming pool. If you are planning to exercise in your pool you might want a more traditional rectangle to give you a clear and concise swim lane. If you love to entertain large groups, a freeform pool might be a better option since they offer little alcoves and places for smaller groups to congregate.
What is your style?
Finally, what is your style? Do you like modern clean lines or do you prefer out of the box, flowing shapes? Is your home modern, traditional, or more of an eclectic style? All of these things are things that you will want to take into consideration.
