How Often Should I Drain and Fill My Hot Tub?

Woman enjoying drained/refilled hot tub

Using a hot tub is such an amazing pleasure. We love the warmth of the water, the massage of the jets, and the companionship of sharing the experience with our family. But wait… The water isn’t going to stay pristine forever. It turns out that you do need to periodically drain and refill your hot tub. Are you wondering what on earth that involves? Don’t worry, Aqua Pools has all the information you need to keep the up status quo. Are you now wondering “How often should I drain and fill my hot tub?” Here’s the scoop.

When Should You Drain Your Hot Tub?

The standard answer is about every three to four months. If you use your hot tub every now and then, you could possibly go four months before draining and refilling. Also, how many people use your hot tub? If you typically have more than one or two people using it, you may need to go through the draining/refilling process every three months.

Why Do You Need to Drain Your Hot Tub?

After a while, your water just won’t be fresh anymore. Chemicals start to build up and do not dissolve completely. The by-products of the chemicals stay in the water. Plus, every time a person gets into the hot tub, their body lotion, deodorant, perfume, and skin cells slough off and end up in the water. It takes a bit of time, but after a few months, there will be particles in your hot tub that ideally shouldn’t be there.

Signs It’s Time to Drain Your Hot Tub

Now, we are not saying you should wait until you actually observe these signs to drain and refill your hot tub. Just put it on the calendar as a task to do every three to four months and you will be good. However, if you were to wait much longer than that you would encounter a few tell-tale signs that your hot tub needs attention. One, your water could become cloudy. Two, the water could become foamy. And three, your water could begin to smell. It’s much better to get into the habit of draining and refilling your hot tub every three to four months and all will be right in your world.

How to Drain Your Hot Tub

The simplest method to use to drain your hot tub is your garden hose. Attach the end of the hose to the hot tub spigot/drain valve and drain the water into an inconspicuous patch in your lawn. Don’t do this right after you have added a bunch of sanitizer, because that won’t be good for your lawn. If the chlorine level is low, you can drain the water into your lawn or garden bed without worry. This process will take a couple of hours. If you want to speed things up a lot, you can use a submersible pump, which will get the job done in less than a half an hour. For the remaining water that sits at the bottom of the hot tub after draining, you can use a shop wet/dry vac to remove it.

Then What?

After the water has been drained, clean the shell of the hot tub thoroughly. Clean your filter as well. Once that has been accomplished, you can refill the hot tub and add chemicals to balance the water. Oh, and reheat the water of course. If you start this process in the early part of the day, you can definitely start enjoying all the benefits of your hot tub by evening.
